R.I.P Aaliyah

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the death of Aaliyah Dana Haughton. There are only a few artists that whenever I hear their music, I instantly think of my childhood and Aaliyah is definitely one of them. I still remember dancing to ‘Back & Forth’ at my school disco and the exact place I was heard the news that she had died. I even remember colouring the ends of my hair red when I was 15 because I wanted to look like Aaliyah in the ‘Try Again’ video (thanks mom).

Aaliyah wasn’t just a talented singer, she was also a budding actress. Her debut film Romeo Must Die was an instant hit and she quickly followed that by starring as Queen Akasha in Queen of the Dammed. She was scheduled to star in The Matrix as the character Zee but sadly passed away before the film was released.

Look out for a special Aaliyah documentary on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra in October. It is hosted by DJ Trevor Nelson and features me talking about her film career.

GEEK FACTS:
Born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York
Best friend was Kidada Jones (Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton’s daughter).
Married R. Kelly when she was only 15 years old. He was 27.
Aaaliyah had 4 tattoos: The letter “A” on the side of her wrist, an Egyptian Unk in her inner wrist, a music symbol on her ankle and a dove on her lower back.
Performed with Gladys Knight at age eleven in Las Vegas.
Got her big break on the television show Star Search (1983).
Auditioned for the Elton John’s Broadway show, Aida.
Her uncle, Barry Hankerson, was formerly married to singer Gladys Knight.
Was considered for the role of Alex in Charlie’s Angels (2000), but casting directors deemed her too young and the part went to Lucy Liu.
Was the first choice to play Valerie in Josie and the Pussycats (2001), but had already signed on for the lead role in Queen of the Damned (2002). Rosario Dawson eventually got the part.
Was originally cast in the title role in Honey (2003) but died before production began. Jessica Alba won the part after her death.
Aaaliyah’s video Try Again was the most viewed video of 2000 – 2001, getting over 85,000 views daily.
At Aaaliyah’s funeral, 22 white doves were released from the steps of the church. One dove for each year of her life.
Aaaliyah’s brother Rashad completed the unfinished voice over work for Queen of the Damned.
At Aaaliyah’s funeral, 22 white doves were released from the steps of the church. One dove for each year of her life.
As of 2011, Aaaliyah has sold 92,000,000 albums across the globe.

There Is A Killer On The Loose!

Oh I’m excited about this one! The Texas Killing Fields is based on the true events of a sadistic serial killer on the loose. If that sounds a bit dull, well that’s not it. Since 1971, over 60 bodies were dumped in what the locals called “The Killing Fields” of Texas (cringe). The film stars Sam Worthington as a local homicide detective who teams up with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, a cop from New York City to investigate a series of unsolved murders.

The film is directed by Ami Canaan Mann and will be out in the US on the 7th October but there’s no sign of a UK date yet.

GEEK FACT: Ami Canaan Mann is the daughter of film maker Michael Mann (The Insider, Collateral and Public Enemies).

Police Academy Is Coming Back!

Earlier on this week I caught up with the lovely Michael Winslow. I asked him about Police Academy (obviously), Bill CosbyGremlins and he told me which British TV show he’d love to go on. Any guesses as to which one it is? I’ll give you a hint, it’s a BBC show that a lot of women wouldn’t necessarily watch.

GEEK FACT: Michael will be at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from the 3rd-29th August so if you’re lucky enough to be down there, definitely go and check him out!
